The Russian Hill neighborhood is usually defined as between Van Ness and Columbus
Avenue, Broadway and Fisherman's Wharf. The name comes from the early Russian
explorers who had a settlement here, complete with graveyard at the top of what
is now Vallejo Street.
The neighborhood has been home to Mark Twain, Jack London, Frank Norris, Ambrose
Bierce, Bret Harte, Willis Polk and Jack Kerouc. While primarily a residential
neighborhood, it also has the popular "crookedest street" of Lombard, and some of
the best views of the bay.
